Northumberland – Introduction to Green Roofs

£55.00£65.00

Description

Cath Basilio studied Architecture at Sheffield University and went on to work at Sheffield City Council, greening buildings by stealth with little or no budget.  Completing the first green roof (1200m2) on a public building in Sheffield gave clients the confidence to welcome green roofs on other projects, including Sharrow Primary School, the most researched green roof in the UK.  This project was completed in partnership with Nigel Dunnett (Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield) one of the world’s leading voices on innovative approaches to planting design.  Later, 10 years as a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University created opportunities to spread knowledge of the potential of roof greening and run hands-on projects, building green roofs with volunteer teams.  Today, building two low-energy houses in Warkworth has given an opportunity to do some more roof greening.

Pip Sharp has a BSc (Hons) in Plant Sciences and a MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment.  After working in EIA for 12 years she enrolled at the Inchbald School of Design, graduating in 2016 with a Diploma in Garden Design (Distinction).  Since then, she has combined her expertise in both areas to create gardens that have a light touch on the environment and seek to maximise opportunities for biodiversity.

Garden House is the private home of Pip Sharp.  The family are currently building a garden studio with a green roof.  Teaching will take place inside the house with practical activities taking place in the garden.

Please note that all activities will be ground based, but should members wish to view or access the studio roof they will first be required to sign a specific access waiver.

Trainees should wear clothes suitable for the weather conditions on the day and bring gloves, boots and a packed lunch. Tea/coffee/biscuits are provided.

The cost of this workshop is £55 per member, £65 per non-member. Please bring a packed lunch, tea/coffee and cake will be provided.
