East Sussex – Exploring Plant Families: Genus, Species & Cultivar

£75.00£95.00

Description

The Garden House is a working and inspirational garden filled to the brim with an ever-changing scene of trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, annuals, bulbs and vegetables with the recent addition of a gravel garden. The Garden House itself is a beautiful wooden workshop nestled amongst the trees in the garden, warmed in winter by a cosy woodburning stove.

In this workshop we will learn about plant classification. We will explore plant families, genus, species and cultivar. Learning to identify plant families will help you notice similarities between plants, understand their growth habits and growing requirements, and even identify seedlings. The day will include:

• Ways of looking at plants and their structure

• Sorting the plants into categories

• Learning correct labelling techniques

• A design/planting element – looking at the shapes of plants and how they work together

• You’ll be asked to research a plant family prior to the day

Workshop Tutors:

Bridge Saunders and Deborah Kalinke share a passion for horticulture and enjoy passing on their knowledge. Bridge taught horticulture at Plumpton College for many years, and Deborah had her own Garden Design business plus was a teacher. Together, they have developed The Garden House as a way to make connections with both beginners and more experienced gardeners, inspiring people to develop their own gardens, however large or small, and showing them ‘what to do, and when’. Their focus is on learning by doing; gardening sustainably and organically; with the mantra “right plant, right place” very much in mind, enabling the making of gardens with interest throughout the year.
