Description
Christ’s College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge and has the only circular lawn in all the Colleges, and dates back to 1505. The gardens consist of a series of 4 courts with formal and informal planting displays, and the Master’s Garden. The College also has the famous Milton’s Mulberry Tree which was grown from the root of an original Mulberry Tree planted in 1609 (the year after English poet John Milton’s birth).
The first court garden is bordered by a variety of shrubs and magnificent Wisteria sinesis covers the south facing wall. The second court consists of formal lawns bordered by an informal planting scheme. The third court features an extensive collection of irises and salvias. The iris collection began in 1946 with a large number being donated. The Fellows Garden was structured in 1825 with informal borders, shrubs, trees and winding paths reflecting the ideas of J C London. Finally there is the Darwin Garden created in 2009 as part of the celebrations to mark the bicentenary of Charles Darwin in 1809 . The garden is planted with a selection of plants that Darwin would have encountered on his botanical voyages on the ship HMS Beagle.
This tour of Christ’s College Gardens in central Cambridge will be led by the Head Gardener of the Spring Gardens, Sergio Ballarin.
