Fife – Creating Compost and It’s Value in the Garden

£45.00£65.00

Description

Kirklands garden is situated on the edge of Saline village amongst 20 acres of ancient woodland. The sloping garden is home to an abundance of fritillaries, primula (30 varieties) trilliums, hellebores and much more. There is a large tiered vegetable garden with raised beds, a large rockery, herbaceous border, large polytunnel and many plants for sale.

Peter Hart, owner of Kirklands garden, will start the day at the all important area of the garden where the compost is created. Fundamental to successful gardening is the soil and you will discover the many secrets to making good compost. Walking alongside the Saline Burn and adjacent to the ancient woodland, you will see the wonderful array of woodland plants, including meconopsis, trilliums, hellebores, primula, and many interesting and unusual shrubs and trees. There is a unique bog garden as it occupies a slope and is fed by springs – in fact much of the garden is sloping. Peter is a true plantsman and enthusiast and is delighted to impart his knowledge and stories about the creation of this lovely garden. At the far end is the Walled Garden which was a pony field when the Harts bought the property, and has now been transformed into a terraced vegetable garden with raised beds, paths and walls.

Many different vegetables are grown for the house along with currant bushes, strawberries, blueberries and along the south facing wall are 17 different varieties of apple, including heritage, modern and cooking. There is a herb garden and a greenhouse for tomatoes and housing tender plants over winter. A rockery and herbaceous borders are a further feature at Kirklands along with a polytunnel bursting with activity. There are good value plants for sale – mostly propagated from many of the interesting varieties of plants in the garden.

Peter Hart is a plant enthusiast, especially woodland plants from ferns and trilliums to primula and meconopsis. Good soil is the key to success and Peter is an expert on compost along with the huge variety of plants grown at Kirklands.
