Description
Nant-y-Bedd translates from the Welsh as ‘Stream of the Grave’ – there are two Bronze Age burial mounds where the stream starts its journey from the top of the mountain. Nant-y-Bedd is a 10 acre organic garden and woodland located at 1200 feet up in the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. Garden owner Sue Mabberley has been gardening there for 44 years, assisted over the past 28 or so years by her husband, Ian. Slowly but surely the garden has grown and evolved with various projects being added over the years, including the natural swimming pond, the shepherd’s hut, tree-sculpture ‘Cedri’c and most recently, the treehouse.
Mick Petts, is a landscape-based sculptor and garden designer with many years of experience working with natural materials. He has worked on projects large and small for both private and public sector clients. For those familiar with Nant-y-Bedd, Mick designed and built the natural swimming pond, Cedric and Hart’s Rise tree sculptures, and most recently the ‘Chaise Log’ for our Silent Space. Garden owner Sue Mabberley, will be assisting Mick on the day. Sue has a First-Class Honours degree in Environmental Systems, has professionally devised and delivered practical environmental training courses and most importantly, as mentioned above, has gardened wildly and enthusiastically at Nant-y-bedd Garden for more than 44 years!
Workshop Description
Give your beloved plants the support they need, but at the same time make your garden look even lovelier. There’s only one thing to beat a hand-crafted plant support, and that is a hand-crafted plant support crafted by your own hand! This workshop is timed to take advantage of the part of year when cutting back coppiced and pollarded growth provides a good amount of useable material.
Included in the day:
- Learn how to identify and cut suitable material from the garden & hedgerows at Nant y Bedd, different willows, hazel, cornus and a variety of other species.
- Learn a set of simple techniques that have multiple uses, easily learnt solutions to the perennial problem of floppy plants and giving aspirational climbers something attractive to hang on to.
- Choose from a range of examples: traditional wigwams, lattice structures, and new designs developed specifically for this course.
- Take away your hand made structures at the end of the day.
- *Complete your visit to Nant-y-Bedd with a garden tour with Sue
